Calculate win and place returns for each-way bets. Essential for horse racing, golf, and any market with place terms.
| Scenario | Return | Profit | ROI |

| If Wins | $107.50 | +$87.50 | +437.5% |
| If Places | $27.50 | +$7.50 | +37.5% |
Each way (EW) is two bets placed simultaneously: a win bet and a place bet, each for the same unit stake. When you place a ВЈ10 each way bet, you stake ВЈ20 total. The win part pays out at full odds if your selection wins. The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds if your selection finishes in a specified number of places.
The place return formula: Place Odds = 1 + (Win Odds − 1) × Fraction. For a horse at 9.00 (8/1) with 1/4 place terms, place odds = 1 + 8 × 0.25 = 3.00. Your £10 place stake returns £30 — a £10 profit on the place half, offset by the £10 win stake lost, for a net +£10 if the horse places but doesn't win.
Number of places paid depends on the race and bookmaker: 5–7 runners = 2 places, 8–11 = 3 places, 12+ = 4 places. Large handicaps (16+ runners) sometimes pay 5 places at 1/5 odds. Always check the terms before betting.
Each way betting offers best value with longer-priced selections (5.00+ / 4/1+). On short-priced favourites, the place fraction delivers tiny returns that don't justify doubling the stake. The sweet spot is 6.00–20.00 decimal odds in a competitive field.
ВЈ10 EW at 8.00 (7/1) with 1/4 place terms Place Odds = 1 + 7 Г— 0.25 = 2.75 Win Return = ВЈ10 Г— 8.00 = ВЈ80 Place Return = ВЈ10 Г— 2.75 = ВЈ27.50 Total Stake = ВЈ10 Г— 2 = ВЈ20 If WINS: ВЈ80 + ВЈ27.50 в€’ ВЈ20 = +ВЈ87.50 profit If PLACES: ВЈ27.50 в€’ ВЈ20 = +ВЈ7.50 profit If LOSES: ВЈ0 в€’ ВЈ20 = в€’ВЈ20 loss
Each way means two equal bets: one on the selection to win, one on it to finish in a specified number of places. If it wins, both bets pay. If it only places, just the place portion pays. If it misses the places, both are lost.
1/4 is standard in most UK races with 8+ runners. 1/5 is used in large handicap fields (12–16+ runners). 1/3 is rare and offered promotionally. The higher the fraction (e.g., 1/2 vs 1/5), the better your place return.
It can be when you correctly assess the probability of your selection placing vs winning. Bookmakers sometimes price place markets inefficiently — if you believe a 12/1 shot has a 30% chance of placing but the implied probability from 1/4 odds is only 20%, there's genuine value. Use this calculator alongside a probability estimate.
Yes. Each way is common in golf (top 5/10/20 finishes), cycling grand tours, snooker, and any event with multiple finishing positions. Place terms vary widely — always check before betting.
